Frogs to Princes

Some of you may have known Grace from what you saw

Some of you may  know her from what you heard

Some of you may  know her because you spent time with her

So to all of you   how ever you know her, … how ever you,  remember her now,  Picture her.

As I  tell you a story,  it is a story of adventure, it is a story trust, it is a story of love.

It is a story about frogs and princes.

Once upon a time,  in a land far away, there lived a young girl.

Despite a tough early life living on small Canadian prairie farmstead in the dirty thirties, this girl learned to treasure a sense of humour,  believe in the wonder of life and to find the magic around her.

She grew up, with those cold north winter winds that dig deep into your bones, and the whispering warm lazy golden summer breezes that waved and spoke to  her as they passed  on their way, over wheat fields and into the distance.

The winters made her tough,  the summers, filled her with the desire to find out where the winds could take her.

When she turned sixteen,  she went to an early summer picnic with her friends and other young people,  down by the river in Edmonton.

As she recounts the story of that day,  you feel the excitement in her voice, you see the glint of a smile in her eye.  She tells how,  she walked up from the river bank, her hands in her coat pocket,  towards a group of  her girl friends who were standing around talking to a couple of cute boys….

“What secret surprise do you think i have in my pocket?”   she said,  peaking the interest of the  girls and  catching the eye of the  boys.

..Waiting for the girls to insist on knowing what her surprise was, with her perfect timing.

Imagine the look of mischief in her eyes at that moment, as out of her pocket, she pulls a large  frog and holds it up for everyone to see.   All  the young girls fled.

One young man stayed behind,  impressed with the beautiful uncommon girl,  with the sense of humor and adventure.

That was the day that Grace picked up a common frog and found a handsome young prince.   (I am sure there was a kiss at some point soon after because from that day forward the young man and this beautiful girl would spend the rest of their lives together).

Now,  fairy tales are more than  just good times and fancy castles. Because, for you to have a real  true fairy tale,  you need adventure; You need challenges;  You need to conquer the unknown and after many challenges if you are lucky you get a fairy tale ending.

Following her prince, so charming,

She set off to foreign lands.  It was no longer the Canadian prairies. From Peru, Colombia and Argentina to Costa Rica,  Spain and France,   she had many adventures.  she tells of Raising four children, of having to explain to her bewildered seven year old what rain was, of raising ant eaters and monkeys as pets.  There were castles and parties, as well as bandits and many challenges.

She would do what others would not. She understood and was comfortable talking to the poor and the disadvantaged. She was never afraid to discover something new, she was never lost and she never worried where she went or how to get to her destination because she trusted that wherever she was was where she was supposed to be.

She believed that There is always something worth seeing wherever you are.

She taught us all some simple magic, by encouraging us to believe in more than what we were told and to find out for ourselves what is real.  To believe in people for who they are and not by the opinion others have of them.

After a life of adventure and many challenges this fairy tale story leads us to England.  And It is no coincidence she ended up in the magic little village of Burley, where people  understand the adventures of life, and what it takes to make a good fairy tale.

Of all the places and  adventures  this was her  finest hour. She loved her home, the people and  the life that she made here.

Grace lived a charmed life,  she worked hard for it and she knew the value of what she had  and she cherished it and  all the people that surrounded her.

From frogs to princes Grace ended her days happy in her domain after a good life that no one could say was anything less than a true fairy tale.

But her story does not end, here. She left a bit of her humor and wisdom everywhere she went. So wherever you are, if you notice that that is where you are meant to be it may well just be Grace.GiGi

Frogs to Princes

Once upon a time,  in a land far away, there lived a young girl.  From an early age it was clear that She was unlike the other girls.  Despite a tough life living on small prairie farm in thirties this girl learned early to have treasure a sense of humour,  believe in the wonder of life look for the magic that surrounds you.

Grace spent many hours as a young girl out in the open prairie riding her horse to school crossing the fields where the warm summer breeze can be seen as it makes its way in waves over the wheat and  headed off into the far distance beyond sight.

Grace believed quietly in magic. She believed that there were many wonders waiting  for her in life. Grace tells the story of the day her fairy tale adventure began.

When she was sixteen she went to a early summer picnic with her friends and other young people down by the river in Edmonton.

As she tells the story of that day,  you  see the  glint in her eye, her smile,  she tells how she went down to the  rivers edge and  came back up with her hands in her coat pocket to a group of  her girl friends, who were talking to a couple of boys….  What do you think i have in my pocket?  she said peaking the interest of the  girls and  catching the eye of the  boys.  Just waiting for one of the girls to insist  on knowing what her surprise was.  She pulled out of her pocket a handsome large young frog and  showed it to all present the young girls all fled but one young man was impressed with this beautiful girl who was so uncommon.

That was the day that Grace met her handsome young prince. I am sure there was a kiss at some point because from that day forward young man and this beautiful girl would spend the rest of their lives together.

Now fairy tales are more than  just good times and  fancy castles. For there to be a true fairy tale you need adventure and  you need challenges you need to conquer monsters and outsmart unknown perils.

So they set off to the wilds of  south america to make magic and  find their fortune.  As Grace would tell you  every adventure got better and better from  Columbia where they outwitted the  bands of  armed guerillas storming their camp and raising their children with the monkeys, ant eaters, foxes and  drunken donkeys,  to the  coastal desert of Peru where they did not see rain for seven years.

She lived in her first castle when their adventures took them to Argentina.

Followed by  She found a kind of personal richness on the coasts of Costa Rica.   Grace was memorable for her charity work at the thrift shops and working with the  mentally handicapped.  She would do what others would not adn talk to the poor adn the  dissadvantaged She was always involved with charities and  driving the country  discovering new places.

She never worried about where she went or how to get to her destination,  when she drove she trusted that where ever she was that is where she was meant to be and that if she looked she would discover something worth while and interesting a treasure of some sort.

She taught us  some simple magic over the years and  encouraged us to believe in more than what we were told and to find out for ourselves what was real.

From the wilds of the  americas the winds of fortune  led her to the land of  kings and  of knights spain was a discovery of culture and historic treasures. Ruined castles and languages.  Grace was always interested in learning, she would always have several language programs from  greek german, italian french.  She loved to talk to people.

It was france that provided one of the  final lessons of life, the discovery european culture and  food.  A chance to learn a new language in depth.

With her seventh challenge overcome she was now ready for the  biggest and final  adventure. She had finally  conquered the world and  she made it to the  land of  Princes and  Queens.  Grace had arrived to her prize destination. England  and  it is no coincidence that they her and  her prince charming ended up in the  little village of Burley , where magic is known to  be found in the  forest. where people  understand the  adventures of life.

Yes of all the places and  adventures  this was her  finest hour. She loved her home, the people and  the life that she made here.

Grace lived a charmed life, and she worked hard for it and she knew the value of what she had found and  she cherished it and  all the people  that surrounded her.

FRom frogs to princes Grace ended her days happy in her domain after a good life that no one could say was anything less than a true fairy tale.

Once in a lifetime

If you are lucky, in your life you will come across someone who speaks your language.  You will know what I mean when you meet them and  they start to speak to you.  You might have known them for a long time or it may be your first encounter. But in an instant you will realise that they are speaking to you in a way that no one else ever has.

We are not talking about your usual language. We are talking about communicating with who you are, talking to that part of you that you thought was all alone in the world.  The part that hid from everyone because it knows not many people are ready to listen to what it has to say or that they would  hurt its feelings with a glance or a comment and you just are not willing to put that part of you through that experience.  You may remember when that part was free o talk and  play. A long time ago.  You may not remember exactly when it went into its seclusion but as you look back now and  feel what had happened you may remember exactly when  or you may not.

If you are lucky, once in your life you will come across someone who somehow knows that that part of you is there. And when they talk to you they are talking to that part, or that part somehow feels  able to come out and  notice.

Who is this person?

The thing is, it may be a person  or for many of us it may be a place, or a series of  things that just make us feel whole again.

I am lucky, I met someone who speaks to me. She is wonderful and kind and  beautiful.  She is strong and  smart and  gentle. She is a mix of extremes in perfect harmony.  With one look she can stop you cold or she can melt your heart.

Perhaps you have met her.  I would love to tell you more but I have to get back to work.

A lesson to remeber

He walked into the living area.  She was sitting, her arms open wide.  She was talking to her friend describing something, and then, they both laughed.  He noticed how she laughed so beautifully,  the way she moved, the way her ears would go pink when she got excited with what she was doing.

Every time he saw her, the same feeling came over him as it did the very first time she came into his life.  Sometimes he would turn around and leave where she was, just to come back  and see her  for the first time again. He didn’t really think about it, what that feeling was.  He was almost unconscious that he was affected at all.  If he had thought about, it he might have realized what it was.  The welling of happiness, the contradicting excitement mixed with absolute calmness, a desire to laugh while pondering the most serious secrets of the universe, a unquestioning knowledge that he would do anything to make her happy, would have been obvious signs that he loves her.

They had become good friends since they met.  They would talk for long stretches of time about the most important things in the world, yet he never really remembered what it was that they spoke about. Their time together always seemed to last an eternity when they were talking, but as soon as they had to go their way he only remembered how beautiful her big soft eyes were.  Or how soft she felt when they touched for some reason.

Today he was going to show her something new.  He had been planning this for a while, he was looking forward to the look on her face when he showed her is  new secret.

He didn’t have to say much as he went by her, she knew the routine.  They had been playing this game for a while now.  She liked him, he was different. He didn’t  scare her like other males did. She remembered the first time she had seen him how she had thought that he was a bit odd. But the each time she saw him she noticed that she liked the way he moved and the way he handled things. He was gentle, and he liked to play, she never saw him get upset. Except that one time when someone was picking on the guy with the injured leg, she thought he was going to blow a blood vessel he was so worked up.

As he went outside she made some excuse and followed shortly after.  He was on the other side of the green space when she came out, he was acting like he had not seen her, but she knew that he was waiting and would have caught sight of her the moment she came out.

Without a word he turned and she saw him dart to the left into the bushes. She jumped she was a bit startled by how fast he had gone, and quickly went after him.  He always tried to outpace her but they both knew she was much faster than he was and in no time she caught up with him and they both laughed. He was a bit out of breath so he didn’t talk but the look in his eyes told her that today would be special.  The went on in silence just enjoying each others company.  She liked the way he smelled, every time she smelled him she felt like she could let her guard down because he was there to watch out for her.

She had never been this way. There were some areas she stayed away from, and she didn’t hang out with those who liked to be too risky.  She saw her self as brave and smart so it wasn’t that she had not had her share of adventures but she was selective as to who she wanted to spend her time with and what she would do.  Going out to eat in the evenings was fun and she had lots of friends, but they tended to like going to the usual places.  Here was this guy she had always thought was rather unadventurous showing her something new. taking her into the woods and along the forest trails.  She liked it.  She had not told him yet that she would like to get more serious. It just wasn’t the right time yet, but soon she would.  She knew that he liked her, she could feel it, as if the signs were not enough.

They had been walking along the path for some time now she was starting to get a little tired and was hoping they would stop soon. He nodded that just up ahead they would be turning right  off the path. The turn would be quick and he told her that if they didn’t pay attention they could miss it because the path was quite overgrown and the vegetation had gotten quite thick.  And as they turned the corner she was shocked there was a tunnel of bushes they had to go through.  And then suddenly there before her was the most beautiful sight she had ever seen.  He had brought her to the most beautiful clearing on a rock outcrop overlooking the lake, the sun was setting down the lake and the water was shimmering gold and red, and the light was perfect.  The outcrop had a rock face rising up to her left and partially behind her, and had a thick growth of brambles and roses on the other side, above the rock high above jutted out making a high roof. The spot was secluded private and obviously no one ever came here.   At her feet the ground was soft and cool, carpeted with clover, and wild flowers. The  perfume was heady, it smelled sweet like honey and it looked like it would be thick and soft, she loved clover. She just wanted to roll in the clover…..

She realized she wanted to roll in the clover with him.  she came up behind him. She knew she could easily take him.  He was looking out muttering something about having looked for a while for some place where he could ….  she flipped him over, pinned him to the ground and started burrowing her nose into his neck and face. It took him a second but he responded with a huge grin and they were kissing.  They rolled in the clover, taking turns pinning each other down, she let him get on top a few times she was having the best time ever. She had rolled around with some others before and received a few kisses, but she didn’t like the sloppy tongues and how rough they were. She had heard from the older girls who joked and laughed about their rabbits.  She was right this one was different. He kissed her gently, slowly, his tongue licked her with kindness and loving. He really cared for her. He would protect her, he would make a good mate.

He started licking her face and ears, she felt them turning bright red and she was not embarrassed, she liked it, she wanted him to do it more, she didn’t have that old urge to push this kind of attention away. She liked it a lot. She started to feel something she had never felt before. She wanted him.  The comments the other girls had made about their rabbits now made sense, she could feel the longing between her legs, she could feel that she wanted more than just a rabbit she wanted him, she wanted him deep inside of her. She wanted him to make love to her and fill her with him in so many ways.  She wanted him to make love to her.  She turned him over, looked deep into his eyes, she nibbled on his neck and told him “I want you to be my rabbit” he wasn’t sure what she meant but that she wanted to make love with him here and now.  There was nothing he wanted more. They rolled around and made love well into the morning. And it was more than either of them had imagined.

They woke up on the outcrop, realizing that they had spent the night out in the open they had not been home and that they were going to get an earful.  There was no way they would be able to hide that they had been out together.

But it was time. They were going to start a family and  the burrow would be happy. She licked his fur and he licked her as they groomed each other with love. She was going to spend much more time with him and they would go  searching for food together, they would make their own den in the burrow and occasionally they would come back to this secluded outcrop and eat clover together and watch the sunset where time would stop and moments would last forever with her.

He was happy to be her rabbit, and she got to play with her rabbit every night and day that she wanted.

The life of a rabbit isn’t so bad when you found the one you love and can spend the rest of eternity with them.

eternity secluded rabbit

Remembering what it was like a long time ago, as a child, she looked out over the lake for the first time in day light.  She could tell this was going to be a good vacation.imagejpeg_2_3[1]

Summer was already in the air. You could smell the familiar smells of morning and camping that were so familiar and  comforting.  Memories of times past gently recalled with every scent, sound, and quality of the light.  A smile came to her lips as she stretched.

To her left, over by the  trees a rabbit caught her eye. It was eating calmly gently stepping from morcel of grass to wild flower.  He seemed so calm and at peace focusing on what interested him in the moment. She watched him for a while wondering what life would be like for a rabbit in the wild.  When a squirrel made its morning chatter as if wanting to wake all the campers hoping for his breakfast too.  She saw the rabbit’s white tail flash once and  then he was gone in a wild frenzy of self preservation from all the dangers and  things he did not understand.

She smiled and felt mixed feelings for the poor rabbit, free to live in the moment and  just be,  yet always having to be on edge with the fear for its life.

Meanwhile the squirrel, who had made the rabbit scamper off in fear that the sky would come crushing down,  had moved on to forage for pine nuts and other treasures.

He saw a large cone that was sure to have something interesting, as he hopped over the  pesky needles. Hopping as if each pine needle was poking his feet.  He was rather graceful,  he thought, as he flew through the air to the next spot getting closer to that ripe cone.  Reaching his goal, he picked the cone up in his paws and  sniffed.  Three was something familiar about this, was it one he had already examined, or was this a new one, had he taken the seeds already and hidden them well in that place? What was that place?  He could almost remember where it was.  Oh wait there is one seed left, Bonus!.  It took some effort but he got it and stored it in his cheek pouch.

He made his graceful hops through the air to a secluded spot that he was sure only he knew.  A place where he was safe from others, a place where no one else would go and  where his secrets were safe. He looked around to make sure no one was watching and  there he placed this latest treasure  under a tuft of grass.  There it would be safe for when he would need to come back some day and  dig it up.  He had a feeling that this was not the only thing he had stored in this place.  But he did not remember exactly what it was that he had stored here. He didn’t really have tome to think back to what it was that he had hid, or where because he had other things to do just now.  He heard the sound of the people in the distance, that meant food, he didn’t understand them exactly, but he knew that sometimes they would stuff him with strange things that he liked the taste.  Maybe one day he would stand up to them and  demand to be fed like his cousin had done.  He had meant to find out what that was like, but he hadn’t seen him for a while now.

She watched the squirrel come towards her, almost looking like it was expecting to be fed.  She tossed him a piece of waffle, like she had done years past as a child.  He took the scrap and  ran back to the tree.

Rabbit had come back out to eat, nibbling on the fresh little saplings that were growing out of the grass around the tree.  He watched the squirrel by the the woman and  noted how unwise it would be to get that close to something so big on purpose.  As Squirrel ran past  he paid him no attention because he knew squirrel was going up the tree, and besides squirrel was no match for his strong legs and  back claws, no one could match rabbits for strength and  speed.  Nothing was better than being a rabbit.

She watched and thought how wonderful it would be to spend an eternity watching life. Noticing how every creature has its strengths and  its weaknesses and how for eons we’ve made the most of what we have and life has its wonderful moments.  And that somehow in ways we do not always understand we all make up a part of something bigger.

She laughed as she heard people walking by and  she thought about the rest of her day. What a day it was going to be. She looked out over the lake and  smiled like a child feeling the lake for the very first time again.

An angel looked at me

You might not know it at first, but when an angel looks at you and sees you,  your life is about to change in ways you never knew were possible.

Get ready to see things you never noticed, to hear songs from places that used to only make noise,  to feel more vibrantly and brilliantly things that were hidden to you.

You will know an angel has seen you when the air smells fresh and sweet every morning and all day long.

When your heart feels happy for no reason at all.

It takes all kinds to make a world.

It takes many different kinds of people in the world to make it interesting. There is so much to experience and learn out there that we could never experience it all without team work.

when you come across someone who somehow annoys you, by the way they talk, or dress or the company they keep. If anyone out there stirs in you an emotion, thank them for providing you with a new experience. If it is a new experience you are fortunate, if it is an old experience then perhaps it is time to understand this experience and truly master it. You say “What?”

If you come across a person that makes you feel good, you do not question, you just enjoy. If you come across a person that makes you feel bad….. you fret, you worry, you steam you fester or you just feel off. Ask yourself why. Then enjoy the feeling.

For truly, the only way you can recognize anything in this world is if it is similar to what you already know. For you to be aware of something it needs to already be part of who you are. So acknowledge who you are when someone enters your world and  is kind enough to  hold up the mirror of who you are.  Be grateful and  see how you can  find  something to  appreciate in what you see.

All that is gold

They say that all that glitters is not gold. But if you look close enough there is value in everything that glitters. It may be worth more than gold.

The “famous” letter telling me of the millions of dollars stashed away by an ex president of an african country. He is being held against his will in prison. Even scams are worth something. They teach us to pay attention to our moral compass, to listen to the voice of reason, to remember to do the right thing not the easy thing.

We can blame others for sucking us into a scam. Or we can be responsible for who we are and what we do. I can say this because I have seen the scam letters before, It would be nice to make 30% of many millions.

In the end however the wise and calm path is to smile and let the letter drop into the garbage. You may even feel some empathy for the people who feel the need to teach the rest of us a lesson.

Flattery will get you everywhere

Our reality is very real to us. It makes life easy when we believe that what we see hear feel think is based on the concept of reality. We feel that because we justify events as being real because our memory confirms that it must be real that it is in fact reality.

Oh this is not meant to be a philosophical rant about nothing being real and that we do not exist. That discussion can be left for another time.

This comment is meant more to point out that when we are being flattered by someone (including ourselves) that it may be a good time to think about what is real.

Recently I was flattered that someone had found my blog, yes this blog. This is just a test site and it is meant for learning. I learned that not all the flattery that we get is genuine, some just want you to trust them. Trust is another reminder that reality is just a concept. Trust means setting aside our experience of reality and accept that it is possible that another version of reality may be more correct than the one we already have.

What have i learned? Flattery is nice, and it is good to be kind to people and tell them nice things. It is good to accept compliments and to believe in yourself. It is good to do all these things and also to remember that even if something is not what it appears, it can still be useful. Enjoy the compliments and flattery that come your way. Just remember that the only reality that exists is the reality you make up in your mind and your life.

Be great because you feel it inside.

(The little voice says “easy for you to say”, and the little voice has a point. However, you have a few choices you can chose to feel and be less than great even downright out and defeated, or you can chose to use your last energy to ramp things up and chose to feel and be great. Either way is a perfectly valid choice. So go ahead and chose whatever you prefer, but as for me, i am great even if it is the last thing i believe. )
